As memory served, Microsoft had made it progressively more difficult to change default file associations with each successive release of Windows. I was pleased to discover that Windows 8 presents a list of programs that can open a file of any given type the first time you try to open the file.
I created a .docx file using LibreOffice Writer and then tried to open it by double-clicking the file name. Windows 8 presented a list of programs that were registered to handle the .docx extension. When I chose LibreOffice Writer, that program became the default for .docx files. It is still possible to open a .docx file using another program by right-clicking the file name and choosing Open with.... Credit where due: Microsoft did this well.
