Control when updates are applied

By default, Windows 8 was configured to download updates automatically and to apply them on shutdown. This can be inconvenient, as we normally need to shut down quickly to board an aircraft or get ready to leave the office for the day. We don't have 30 minutes or more to wait for Windows to apply updates.

To control when updates are applied, open the Control Panel. You can get to Control Panel by switching to the tiled (Metro) view, either by hovering the pointer over a corner of the display or by swiping in from any edge on a touch screen. Then choose Search and begin typing the characters "control panel". Choose Control Panel from the list of programs that Windows presents.

Once you have Control Panel open, navigate to System and Security -> Windows Update -> Change settings. Choose the option that best suits your needs and OK your way out. In my case, I chose to have Windows notify me when updates are available, but not to do anything automatically. That way, I can decide when to apply updates. Shutdown is now very quick.
